4/9/1965Fighting breaks out in the Rann of Kutch between Indian and Pakistani troops. Pakistan attacked Indian borders, Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet, this was manned by the State Armed Police Batallions. In Kutch launched its 8th Infantry Division supported by two regiments of M47/48 Pattons. Operation 'Desert Hawk' was launched to draw away reserves from other vulnerable areas, and possibly to test India's resolve. The Indian Army did not rise to the bait.

7/13/1905Gandhiji opposes Bengal Partition, supports boycott of British goods. During Gokhale Lajpat Rai's deputation to Britain, he appeals to Colonial statesmen to treat India ""an integral part of the Empire"" with consideration. Sanjeevan, weekly from Calcutta, also raised the motto to boycott British Goods.

5/14/1978Jagdishchandra Mathur, modern Hindi playwright, passed away.
8/15/1947India gains independence from the British rule and Pakistan emerges as a separate Islamic nation. Around 600,000 die in clashes during the subsequent population exchange of 14 million people between the two new countries.
