7/20/1969Varahagiri Venkatagiri retired from the post of President.
2/20/1982The Kangla Tongbi war memorial built for 221 members of Advance Base Depot, who laid down their lives to repulse several waves of Japanese attacks, was finally shifted to College of Materials Management Jabalpur. The original memorial was erected on 15 Apr 1946 from local stone and the main epitaph displayed above is of black Naga stone.
6/13/1932Nirmalchandra Sen, great revolutionary, died.
4/5/1908Babu Jagjivan Ram, valiant freedom fighter, was born in Chandwa village in Bhojpur, Bihar. He held many prominent ministerial portfolios such as Communications Minister (1952-56), Railway Minister (1956-62), Food and Agriculture Minister (1967-70) and Defence Minister (1970-74). After 1977, he became the Deputy Prime Minister (Defence) in Janta regime. Thereafter, he established Congress (J). His uninterrupted representation in the Parliament from 1936 to 1986 is a world record. This day is commemorated as ""Samta Diwas"".
12/16/1922Parvati Devi, orator, was arrested for delivering revolutionary speeches in meetings at Hapud and Merrut. She was the first Indian women to get two years long imprisionment during the freedom struggle.
9/7/1998Prof. K. M. Chandy, Congress (I) leader and former Governor of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, died in Kochi at the age of 77.
4/6/1990Bhalchandra Tryambak Randive, senior Marxist leader and founder President of WTU, died.
3/2/1994President's rule in J & K extended.
1/18/1936Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), famous English writer and author, died in Burwash, England at 70. He was a young journalist in British India. He wrote in verses, stories, novels childen's stories some of these were ""The Jungle Book, Kim and Just-50 stories"" and was honoured with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907 for 'Kim' (Indian based story).
4/11/1964Communist Party of India was divided in two parts. Firstly known as Communist Party of India [CPI], its second fragmentation was named as Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. This division was on ideological differences at the international level.
