1/26/1950India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth and the Indian Air Force dropped its ""Royal"" prefix. At this time, it possessed six fighter squadrons of Spitfires, Vampires and Tempests, operating from Kanpur, Poona, Ambala and Palam, one B-24 bomber squadron, one C-47 Dakota transport squadron, one AOP flight, a communications squadron at Palam and a growing training organisation.

12/21/1952Saifuddin Kitchlu awarded the Lenin Peace Prize of U.S.S.R. Award. He was the first Indian to receive this honour.
11/20/1930With all the pageantry of the British Empire, a conference of Indian and British leaders had been convened in London to discuss dominion status for India. Surrounded by Maharajahs in turbans, King George V convened the round table conference in the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords. Notably absent was Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the nationalist movement. The conference saw a breakdown of the Indian caste system as Brahmins dealt with spokesmen for ""untouchable
