6/12/1990Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1D) launched. This is an operational multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite. It is still in service. It was launched by US Delta launch vehicle, Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA.
2/16/1997Ramakrishna Hegde launches a new national political party, Lok Shakti.
11/1/1956Indian Government re-organizes the states according to linguistic principles and inaugurates second Five-Year Plan. The states declared were Madhya Pradesh, Punjab by merging Patiala & PEPSU, Mumbai was divided in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Union Territories namely Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were approved.
11/1/1956Sher Shah Sur died. He was fatally wounded in an explosion on Kalanjara fort while preparing for an attack. He introduced the new silver rupee-coin ""Rupiya"" based on ratio of 40 copper coin pieces (paisa) per rupee and built several roads including the longest road of India known as Grand Trunk Road (now Natioinal Highway-2).
