Historical Event on 11/1/1956

Indian Government re-organizes the states according to linguistic principles and inaugurates second Five-Year Plan. The states declared were Madhya Pradesh, Punjab by merging Patiala & PEPSU, Mumbai was divided in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Union Territories namely Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshdeep Minikai and Amin Divi were approved.

6/4/1926Dalai Lama introduces a tax on ears for Tibetans to equip the army. Those with only one ear will pay half the tax.
12/16/1867Amy Carmichael, Scotch Irish missionary, was born. She went to India in 1895 under the Zenana Missionary Society, remaining there without furlough until her death 56 years later. An invalid during her last 20 years, she worked to rescue children from the Hindus.
2/25/1968Judge Mohammad Hidayatullah became the Chief Justice of India. He held this office till 16/12/1970.
4/15/1992D. T. Lakdawala, former member of Planning Commission, passed away.
3/31/1843Balwant Pandurang Kirloskar (Annasaheb), first musical playwright of Marathi, was born.
1/31/1961Dr. Sri Krishna Sinha, first Chief Minister of Bihar, passed away.
2/28/1987The National Science Day was celebrated for the first time at the ICMR Headquarters and all its Institutes/Centres in February 1987 through exhibitions, lectures, demonstration campaigns etc. (This has now become an annual event).
7/31/1996Joginder Singh became the director of Central Bureau of Investigation (till 30/06/97).
12/7/1993Lalthanhwala sworn in CM of Mizoram.
5/24/1990Surjit Singh Barnala sworn in as Governor of Tamil Nadu.
